China To Reduce Number Of Executions Bbc News
China is to significantly reduce the number of people it executes to “an extremely small number”, a high-ranking court official said to BBC news . Vice-President of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC) said the court would in future deliver more suspended death sentences. Two years ago China gave the SPC power to review death sentences handed down by lower courts. That has already led to fewer executions.
Rights campaigners say China executes more people than any other country. Legislation needs to be improved to reduce the number of death sentences. The SPC would tighten the reins on the use of capital punishment. SPC said: ” it is impossible for the country to abolish capital punishment under current realities and social security conditions. This is an important effort to strictly control the execution of the penalty by judicial organs.
Amnesty International said China executed 1,718 people in 2008 – 72% of the world’s total. The death penalty still applies to 60 offences in China, including non-violent crimes such as tax fraud and embezzlement. The SPC has been working to ensure that the death sentence is imposed only on those who have committed extremely serious or heinous crimes that lead to grave social consequences.
The fact that china executes the most people in the world is insane. I mean they account for 72% of the world’s executions to say the least. Most of the people executed are people who have committed misdemeanors and i am glad that they are revising this process. For more on this move by china, tune in to BBC news.
